CHARACTER INFORMATION
➤ CHARACTER NAME: Roman Godfrey
➤ SERIES: Hemlock Grove
➤ CHARACTER AGE: 17 at canon point, aged up to 18 for obvious reasons
➤ REFERENCE: Wiki page, though it only pertains to knowledge from the show and not the novel
➤ CANON POINT: post-"I'll point them to your lips" conversation, 1x06
➤ SEXUALITY: Roman is depicted as being very sexually active with the opposite sex. In the show, he is never shown as having an attraction to the same sex, but in the novel there are instances between him and Peter that imply an unexplored sexual attraction to the male body as well. Roman asks Peter if he can watch him transform on the full moon, which involves him stripping down, and Roman notes various things about his body, including that Peter is uncircumcised, which isn't usually something another teenage boy would be interested in knowing. With this, I stand at bisexual.
➤ PERSONALITY: Roman is a very multi-faceted guy. Most would look at him in his canon setting and see an entitled heir living solely on the coattails of wealth and renown of his family name. Some jerk kid who orders drinks from a bar at age 17 because who will tell him no, who doesn't care what sort of offensive shit he says about any resident of the town. He is that person. He is an entitled brat that doesn't stop and consider that his actions have consequences. But most look at him and only see that person, because that's all he plans to show those he doesn't trust and/or those he thinks are below him. His disrespect even reaches to the police force, because he knows his mother would never allow him to be incarcerated. He has also expressed disgust at old people for the simple reason of being old, illustrating that when it comes to the world outside arms length is one he regards with a vain eye.
The young jackass is loose, seen sleeping with women in the show very frequently, and this occurs just as much in the novel. Every time that it's expressed, he bribes the girls he's with to never tell anyone of their encounters. Most instances where he is engaged in sexual activity, like in the opening, or in a later scene past his canon point, are outlets of stress relief, or ragesex, etc. than they are pure hedonism though. He takes advantage of the family name too much to have it smeared by his sexual promiscuity. He's manipulative in two ways: money, or his ability to plant suggestions in a person's mind. And while not quite manipulation, when asked if he had involvement in a grave robbery, he puts on an innocent smile and denies all involvement in a believable enough way for those who will take things at surface value. For those who look deeper, it's not hard to tell that he has something else going on.
In Roman's relationships with Shelley and Letha, we see two different facets of loyalty to the girls in his life by blood. With Shelley, we see a devoted older brother who loves her unconditionally, despite her physical mutations and handicaps. She is one of two people we see put a sincere smile on Roman's face. Beyond merely caring for each other as siblings, Roman, a boy who is shown as never pulling his own weight in any other circumstances, is shown on his knees washing her feet for her since her hands are deformed. Shelley is the one person in the show who looks at Roman and sees all the goodness in him, sees a light that no one, not even Peter, sees. Later on in the show, when he loses Shelley, he is desperately trying to find her, hypnotizing himself to try and see through divination/scrying where she is, as well as going to Peter's cousin Destiny, who regularly practices divination. He says that he has to find her because she needs him, but Destiny points out that the reason he's so desperate is probably because it's the other way around.
Moving to Letha, his level of devotion is not quite the same as with Shelley, as their relation is as cousins. His relationship with her reads more as a protectiveness mixed with possessiveness, with borderline romantic undertones. He becomes defensive when he finds out that Peter and Letha are spending time together, which could be related to him being possessive of Letha or of Peter. It's never clearly specified. At the end of the series, we find out, along with Roman as he repressed the memory or was forced to forget by his mother, that he had sex with Letha, either consensually or non-consensually, and planted a suggestion for her to forget about it. This left her with the memory that an angel came and impregnated her.
With Peter, we see more of Roman that expresses a lonely youth and learn that Peter is his first and only friend he's ever had. The Godfrey heir was always above other kids, or they were beyond his respect as many of Hemlock Grove's youth is shown to be judgmental, bullying his younger sister. Peter's life begins in the town as an outcast, and between the rumors of the boy being a werewolf and that Peter was one of few students to be nice to Shelley, Roman becomes curious about him. Approaches him. Through this conflict in the town of some mysterious animal killing young girls meeting Roman's interest to protect the women in his life, Roman builds a relationship with Peter. A foundation based at first on finding a being called a Vargulf grows into a true friendship, and when Peter tries to end their relationship to protect himself, Roman angrily begs him not to. In instances beyond the canon point, at Roman's most tragic hours, he asks for Peter, he wants Peter to be there for him. There are also instances in the novel (which I haven't read up to yet, but I have heard about from those who have read the novel completely) where their connection implies an exploration of each other beyond a brotherly friendship. More of this will hopefully be explored with in game CR.
Finally, in his relationship with his mother, Olivia, we see sides where he both appreciates and loves his mother, and like any teenager, defiantly fights back against her. Roman has every reason to fight back against her though, as in the end it is implied that her Upiric powers to plant suggestion in ones mind works even on another Upir and that she could have been controlling him in certain scenarios, particularly the previously mentioned one with Letha. She even tries to tell Roman to feed off of his daughter, which in the end he fights back by sacrificing his own life. He did not know that he would come back, but this particular scenario shows the level of determination and sacrifice even someone as selfishly driven as Roman can have.
Beyond all relationships, we learn that one particular consistency when it comes to any sexual encounters, alone or with a partner, is his blood kink. In his character introduction, he has sex with a prostitute, but isn't terribly into it until he cuts his thumb and smears his blood on her arm. Another scene, he follows a girl into a bathroom and performs oral on her while she is on her period. A passage in the novel describes that Roman cuts himself just to watch the blood flow, sometimes cutting himself to let blood run over his dick. Just because. It's implied he's probably even masturbated while doing this. There are other instances as well that illustrate just how deep his blood kink goes.
Outward from this, there are scenes between all the plot development that illustrate he is just any other teenage boy growing into a young man. He grows bored, he explores things for curiosity's sake, from Peter's transformation to how kids will react seeing the Godfrey heir talking to some gypsy kid who is rumored to be a werewolf and suspected to have killed some girls in the area. He craves stimulation, be it even in simply kicking a can toward some undefined goal while walking along a creek. He swears and uses slang that sounds completely stupid, and makes some of the most ridiculous faces in reaction to things. He loves his car, he loves driving with the top down and putting on the radio to his favorite songs and singing along without a care in the world. He has no plans for his life because it's all laid out for him. He feels little to no sense of responsibility, except for when it comes to this small group of people he holds within arms length.
➤ POWERS: Roman is coming into the game as a half Upir. This means that his body, while not being crazy regenerative, does not suffer from the long term effects of things like smoking and doing drugs, which are things he does with very fair frequency. He also cuts himself a lot and almost never with marks to show for it, at least for the small cuts. At the end of the season he cuts himself from wrist to elbow, down to the bone, which leads into his transformation into a full Upir. These cuts are the only ones expressed as healing into scars. The Upir transformation is never fully explained but an Upir becomes a full Upir when they kill themselves. They come back to life, presumably killing the part of them that was human. The scars from Upir transformation, are the only marks left on the body, as is expressed with his mother, who is also a full Upir. His mother is shown as being shot multiple times in the show and minutes afterwards being perfectly fine, the only remaining traces being the blood on and damage to her clothes.
Another power is that as a half Upir, Roman can plant suggestions in a person's mind at a maximum of two people, and it isn't without consequence. When asked, he describes the pain with this statement: "You wouldn't notice if a bus hit you," which is a mirror to Roman asking Peter about if the werewolf transformation hurts. He also experiences a nosebleed when using this ability. With a full Upir using this ability, it seems like there are less consequences to using this power as there are many scenes where it's implied that Olivia is controlling others without so much as blinking an eye.
The differences with half and full Upir, as well as the transformation, are important to note if Roman ever is in a situation where he commits suicide. If he were to do such, he would come back as a full Upir later. The amount of time this process takes is not clearly expressed in the show. It could take minutes, could take hours. Roman and his mother are shown as awakening from transformation after being touched by someone, so physical contact could play a role in it.
Also in case it wasn't clear, Upir is just a vampire with a mish-mash of different traits from vampires of varying European origins.
➤ SUITABILITY: Roman loves to take advantage of the power his family name has, while at the same time expresses how bored with his routine life he has become. The environment will require him to do things like work, pull his own weight, as well as learn to respect a chain of command above him, which means that things will be a drastic change for lazy rich boy from the start. However, it would be an experience that would cause (or rather, force) him to grow as a person, to learn things like to give in tandem with all his take. As for the setting of the dome in particular, he has no issues with having sex, so this is a concept he wouldn't struggle with, and his desire to break out of the mundane that was the little town of Hemlock Grove would mean that any initial discontentment wouldn't last long. The Godfrey Institute, the kingdom that awaits for him to inherit his crown, is the pinnacle of modern science and medicine in his universe, so the sci-fi aspects of the game probably wouldn't overwhelm him mentally.
➤ FIRST PERSON EXAMPLE:
[Rolls eyes. Rolls eyes some more. Words cannot express how stupid he thinks these psych evals hidden behind innocent questionnaire things are. Or how uncomfortable he would never admit they make him. It's one thing if it's his uncle Norman asking the questions, it's another if it's strangers in white coats.]
What do you think is your best feature or characteristic? [His name. But sad truths aside, asking his vanity to focus on one thing is hard.] My lips. [A wink and a kissyface.]
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring and why? No, you can not bring a boat. More like if I were stranded in the desert of this island? Shit, I don't know any of that survivalist Man-VS-Wild shit. Probably would just have cigarettes and a lighter. No one goes, "oh, it's time to pack my three things for my stay on a desert island!"
Do you prefer fresh air or air conditioning? Why? AC. Most air conditioners have air filters, right? Same thing trees do, plus climate control. [He has no clue that AC does not include air purification.]
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? [He laughs as if he's heard the funniest thing in the world. The lottery is nothing compared to the money his family already has.
But it would be his money for once, not his mother's...] I would get something nice for my sister. Fuck, probably lots of of something nices.
If you were any animal, what would you be? Who thinks about this shit?
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? [Things he never thought about because his life was decided for him from the day he was born. He shrugs.] Guess all that gypsy hoodoo or whatever that Peter's cousin does is kind of interesting.
Have you ever had something happen to you that you thought was bad but it turned out for the best? Can't think of anything. [Really, he can't. Silver platter life.]
What was the last experience that made you a stronger person? [mmmm....] Too personal. I'd like to skip this question. [More like he can't think of anything that's ever made him a stronger person but he's never been terribly focused on the whole "internal journey of self-awareness" bull.]
